Researchers have recently been finding a number of old dolls washed up along the shoreline.
There’s nothing quite as creepy as an old doll with its two empty eye sockets staring into your soul, which is why researchers with the Mission-Aransas National Estuarine Research Reserve in Texas have been taken aback recently by the appearance of several such dolls along an otherwise unremarkable 40-mile stretch of Gulf Coast beach.
In one video clip posted up on Facebook, one of the researchers can be seen reaching down to pick up one of the dolls which was visible half-buried in the sand.
Once it had been cleaned up a bit, it became apparent that its eyes were missing and that barnacles had grown where its eye sockets were… yikes.
“This is some stuff that comes up all the time,” her colleague remarks. “Look at that. Gooseneck barnacles growing out of the eye. Maybe we’re gonna sell this one on the internet.”
“We found a couple of these every month.”
So what could be the explanation for these dolls turning up on the beach ?
According to researcher Jace Tunnell, this particular stretch of beach (between Padre Island and Matagorda Island) happens to be a magnet for debris from Mexico and the currents favor pushing objects in the sea towards Texas.
Why there are so many dolls in particular, however, remains unclear.
