A fatal plane crash 12 years ago has since been blamed on a crocodile that got loose during a bungled smuggling attempt.
The disaster, which occurred on August 25th, 2010, saw the Filair Let L-410 flight come down shortly after taking off from the city of Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The crash proved fatal – killing 18 passengers and 2 pilots.
At the time, an explanation for what had caused the disaster proved somewhat elusive, but now, investigations have revealed that the unlikely culprit was actually a crocodile that someone had smuggled onto the plane and that had escaped and run amok during the flight.
The enormous reptile had been kept hidden inside a duffel bug, but when it got loose it caused so much fear among the passengers that they all ended up fleeing to one side of the plane.
This sudden shift in weight, it is claimed, caused the plane’s pilots to lose control.
In a final bizarre twist, the offending reptile actually managed to survive the crash only to be hacked to death with a machete shortly after being discovered inside the wreckage.
