The mysterious Stonehenge-like structure was blown up by an unknown attacker and then dismantled by authorities.
Originally constructed in 1980 at a cost of $100,000, the stones are often referred to as the “American Stonehenge” and are thought to serve as some form of foundational reference intended for the survivors of an unspecified apocalyptic event at some point in the future.
The man who commissioned the structure was known only by a pseudonym – Robert C. Christian – who claimed to represent “a small group of loyal Americans”.
Over the years, however, some people came to perceive the stones as ‘Satanic’ in nature, prompting anonymous individuals to vandalize and deface them.
This contempt for the stones seemingly came to a head last week when someone planted a bomb and blew the structure to smithereens.
Local authorities later dismantled what remained of the stones “for safety reasons”.
As things stand, nobody has been able to identify who the perpetrator was or their precise motives, however investigations into the attack remain ongoing.
Ultimately, it’s a sad end for one of America’s most enigmatic and enduring modern mysteries.
