The eerie ruins of a submerged village have been revealed following a period of drought in the region.

Walk through the dilapidated streets of Aceredo in Galicia, Spain today and you might be forgiven for thinking that this once bustling village had recently been subjected to a natural disaster.

In actual fact, however, the entire village had been deliberately submerged in water to create the Alto Lindoso reservoir all the way back in 1992.

Now though, a period of drought has reduced the water level enough to bring this long forgotten settlement to light, revealing its remarkably well-preserved buildings to a new generation.

Tourists have since been flocking to the site to wander its strange, grey streets and ruins.

“It’s as if I’m watching a movie,” said Maximino Perez Romero. “I have a feeling of sadness. My feeling is that this is what will happen over the years due to drought and all that, with climate change.”

While many of the original buildings are still standing, most of the roofs have collapsed, leaving piles of timber scattered everywhere. There are also still signs of what some of the buildings were used for, such as piles of old bottles outside one building that used to serve as the local pub.

Exactly when the reservoir will fill up enough to once again cover the streets and buildings with water, however, remains unclear.
