There’s a 500lb bear on the loose in California and it is doing more than just stealing picnic baskets.

Named after the popular Hanna-Barbera cartoon character, the enormous black bear – which has been spotted across the region – has been responsible for more than 150 calls to law enforcement and wildlife authorities due its penchant for damaging just about everything it comes into contact with.

According to wildlife officials, the mischievous bear has caused “extensive property damage and forcefully entered several homes – including occupied homes.”

“This one individual bear has been linked to property damage at 38 different properties at least,” said Peter Tira from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Unfortunately efforts to trap the bear have come up empty, with Yogi seemingly just as adept as his cartoon counterpart at avoiding capture.

An attempt to scare him away from the area with loud music also failed to achieve anything.

A pro-bear activist group known as The BEAR League has since been trying to appeal to wildlife officials to move Yogi to a new home rather than to put him down.

“The BEAR League reached out to the director of an excellent out-of-state wildlife sanctuary who agreed he has room and would be very willing to give this bear a permanent home,” said the group’s executive director Ann Bryant.

As things stand however, Yogi remains at large.
