Guinness World Records has officially recognized the gargantuan berry as the heaviest ever recorded.

We’ve seen quite a few examples of abnormally oversized fruit and vegetables over the years and this enormous strawberry, which was grown by Israeli farmer Chahi Ariel, is no exception.

Weighing in at a ridiculous 289 grams, the strawberry is around five times heavier than the average weight of a Ilan strawberry – a variety developed at Israel’s Volcani Institute.

Measuring 18cm long and with a circumference of 34cm, the strawberry was grown last year and had been kept frozen since then to give Guinness World Records a chance to authenticate it.

Ariel was delighted when he heard that it had been officially recognized as the world’s heaviest.

“When we heard, it was an amazing feeling,” he said. “I jumped in the car, laughed and sang.”

“We’ve been waiting for this for a long time.”

The previous record holder was a Japanese farmer who grew a 250g strawberry back in 2015.
