I recently saw or read a quick passing note that there could
be a sentient civilization somewhere in the cosmos, a species whose main
existence lies in perusing the Universe either for knowledge or discovery of other
species or life.
(The comment passed by me too fast to capture or pursue
its source.)
Let’s assume I heard it correctly: millions of
extraterrestrials have a purpose and that purpose is to seek out life elsewhere
in the Universe.
Even if this speculation is possibly true, a million
searchers or dis- coverers would be stretched to a considerable degree in its
expe- ditions, since there are estimated to be billions upon billions of possible planets and moons open to possible
sentient or just simple life forms.
This means, as I see it, that a possible search party or
entities (maybe AI agents) that come upon our planet will only be one or a
few, even if our vast life forms prove to be exciting to the home planet (or
civilization).
I don’t see a vast armada of searchers descending upon Earth
– as the scads of UFO sightings/reports imply.
Sure, there may be revisits – few in number – or more like a
ship or two of interplanetary scientists sent our way but, still, nothing in
the way of UFO numbers on record.
A planetary slew of “investigators” seems unlikely, to me,
even if there were a curious lump of ETs hoping to see our planet. It doesn’t
bespeak “advanced.”
And a species only existing to search for life elsewhere,
without an end purpose – even one sparked by a need to escape a dying planet –
seems unlikely to spend such a long time reconnoitering this planet, apparently
without conclusion.
Yet, the ET mind is beyond comprehension by us, with what
ap- pears to be no contact.
However, contact, if it has happened and remains cloaked in
secrecy, may provide a reason for vast visits but, still, we – regular Earth
citizens – remain in the dark, and our conjectures continue, themselves without
conclusion.
It’s all almost sad.
