The gruesome discovery was recently made in an unassuming residential neighborhood of Darlington, County Durham.
Council workers raised the alarm about the horrific scene when they came across a large white chest freezer filled up with at least 100 dead wood pigeons in a quiet residential alley on Wednesday.
It remains unclear how the birds died, who was responsible for dumping them there or why.
“It’s very gruesome, an unlocked freezer full of wood pigeons, decomposing in a back lane, which could’ve been found by a child,” said environmental crime coordinator Paul McQuillan.
“It’s just so unpleasant.”
The local council is currently appealing for information from anyone who might have seen or heard anything.
“I think it’s been dumped by someone who goes shooting and when they have enough birds, they sell them on to a game dealer,” said McQuillan.
“But on this occasion there’s been an issue with the freezer, perhaps it’s broken down and they’ve just dumped it.”
