Stephen and Christine Lock have been plagued for years by garden gnomes inexplicably showing up outside their house.
Garden gnomes – which typically resemble small bearded characters in pointy hats – are quite a common sight in gardens across the UK and Europe, but for one couple, these innocuous little characters have been turning up unannounced outside their home for the last 18 months.
Stephen and Christine, who happen to be the mayor and mayoress of South Molton Town Council in Devon, first became aware of the phenomenon when they arrived home one day to find that there was a gnome sitting in their garden with no indication of who had left it or where it had come from.
Over the next 18 months, several more would suddenly appear without explanation.
The couple never saw anyone leaving the gnomes and no notes were ever left to explain them.
“I just remember coming home one day and didn’t take much notice,” said Christine. “I just thought, ‘Oh well, someone got rid of a gnome and didn’t know where to put it’.”
“So I left it in the garden, but shortly after another came along.”
“I posted on Facebook to say thank you to the person delivering these little creatures to our home – implying that if they wanted them back they were more than welcome to come and collet them – but nobody ever has!”
