NASA has published images of the spacesuit that astronauts will be wearing when they next set foot on the Moon.
Designed and built by Axiom Space, the Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit (or AxEMU), which will be worn by the astronauts on the lunar surface during the Artemis III mission, looks like something straight out of a science fiction movie.
There’s a good reason for this, too – the exterior aesthetics and logo were created by costume designer Esther Marquis who worked on the suits used in the TV series For All Mankind.
While the newly revealed spacesuit is mostly black in the initial promotional shots, the actual spacesuits worn during the mission will be the traditional white color.
“NASA’s partnership with Axiom is critical to landing astronauts on the Moon and continuing American leadership in space,” said NASA Administrator Bill Nelson.
“Building on NASA’s years of research and expertise, Axiom’s next generation spacesuits will not only enable the first woman to walk on the Moon, but they will also open opportunities for more people to explore and conduct science on the Moon than ever before.”
“Our partnership is investing in America, supporting America’s workers, and demonstrating another example of America’s technical ingenuity that will position NASA and the commercial space sector to compete – and win – in the 21st century.”
