The 2,000-year-old structure was defaced by someone with an apparent interest in UFOs and aliens.
Formerly a Roman temple built sometime around 2,000 years ago, the historic building has been in continuous use as a Catholic church since the 7th Century AD and is considered to be one of the best preserved ancient Roman buildings still standing today.
There was an understandable amount of outrage, then, when it was discovered around two weeks ago that someone had scribbled “aliens exist” along with what looked like two crude flying saucers on the wall of the building in blue spray paint.
The lack of working security cameras in the area has meant that the police have struggled to determine who was responsible for defacing the building.
A team of experts has since used a combination of special solvents and lasers to painstakingly remove the paint from the wall without causing further damage.
Whether the culprit had been trying to make some sort of statement, or had simply sprayed the writing on the wall out of pure devilment, remains unclear.
