A PhD student in Antarctica recently captured footage of a camera being lowered down a deep borehole in the ice.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to venture deep beneath the ice in Antarctica ?

Enter Austin Carter – a PhD student with the Center for Old Ice Exploration (COLDEX) who recently captured a fascinating video clip by lowering a camera 300ft down a borehole in Allan Hills, East Antarctica.

The team’s mission is to find and extract some of the oldest ice on the continent – an objective that will help scientists better understand how the Earth’s climate has changed (and will change) over time.

Potential sites for boring are first identified using radar and GPS surveys.

“The goal is to extend the ice core record of climate change back as far as we can,” COLDEX director Edward Brook told the Antarctic Sun.

You can check out the footage for yourself below.
