The footage, which was uploaded recently onto Twitter, has since been picked up by numerous news outlets.
Posted back on October 17th by a Twitter user with the handle “@magot_e_dead”, the intriguing clip shows what appear to be two bright objects moving together across the Californian sky.
“Woah, dude, what is that ?” a woman’s voice can be heard saying.
As the clip continues, the objects disappear briefly behind some clouds before descending underneath, stopping for a few seconds, then continuing to move in a downward trajectory.
“That’s crazy,” the voice continues. “Oh, what ?”
The clip quickly attracted quite a lot of attention, with journalists from NBC News and WSVN 7 expressing an interest in featuring a report on the video on their respective news channels.
The footage also made an appearance in the media abroad, such as in the UK’s Daily Mirror.
But what exactly does it show ?
While some Twitter users were quick to jump to an extraterrestrial interpretation, others, including the woman who posted the video, have suggested that the objects could be flares.
This idea is backed up by the fact that the objects seem to be gradually losing altitude.
You can check out the clip for yourself below – what do you think the footage shows ?
