The UFO Phenomenon

A town in Japan’s Fukushima Prefecture has become synonymous with UFO sightings and the idea of alien visitation.

At a glance, the rural town of Iino might seem like any other small settlement in Japan; that is, at least, until you notice just how much its residents have themed their community around UFOs and aliens.

Once famed for its silk production and weaving industries, Iino has fallen on relatively hard times in recent years, forcing local officials to improvise a way to keep it on the map.

Capitalizing on its reputation for being a UFO hotspot, it turned out, was the ideal solution.

Walking through the town, it’s not difficult to see how the subject has influenced things. UFOs are everywhere, from alien-themed bus stops to UFO-shaped street lamps – and there is even a full-on statue of an alien – perfect for tourist photo opportunities.

The local museum, known as UFO Fureaikan, is home to all manner of UFO themed attractions, including books, photographs and other resources designed to intrigue and amuse.

Last year, in honor of the museum’s 30th anniversary, there was an extensive celebration in the form of a festival attended by enthusiasts decked out in their finest alien costumes.

Whether this will all be enough to revitalize the town’s flagging economy, however, remains to be seen.
