The rejuvenated forests have transformed life for the locals here. Floods are less frequent. Rainfall, once intermittent, is now normal.
“When the forests disappeared, our crops also started drying,” Manu Gurung, a forester at the Kankali Community Forest, told me. “Now, the trees give us rain.”
